YouTube Being Inundated with Spam
There has been a mass outbreak of advertising spam videos being uploaded to YouTube with spammers capitalizing on YouTube not allowing people to report usernames for violations. The way the spam works is like this:
1) A video is put together that is simply a slideshow of images.
2) Text is added to the entire video directing the viewer to see the “more info” area for a link to click.
3) The more info area has a link to the site doing the spamming.
4) An automated program is used that slices the video into different lengths so as not to draw the attention of YouTube.
5) The spam program creates numerous accounts and uploads approximately 50 videos to each account. Because the videos have varying lengths, they are not “flagged” in YouTube’s system.
6) Random (and irrelevant) keywords are generated and placed as the title of the video.
YouTube’s problem is that they do not allow users to report username violators to them. The only thing a user can do is “flag” a video. But even then, if a user flags “too many” then YouTube requires the user to start entering a CAPTCHA phrase for each flag, thus discouraging the user from continuing to assist.
Adding to the problem is that when a YouTube employee views a video flagged for “mass advertising” or “misleading text” they only remove that single video. They don’t look at the user account to see that they have dozens of spam videos. If an account is suspended, the violators simply open more accounts.
The spam is clogging the “recent videos” search function of YouTube with mass spam videos and creating tons of irrelevant videos.
We have three recommendations for YouTube to help combat this problem:
1) Allow users to report violating usernames so that a YouTube employee can look at an entire account for mass spamming versus individual videos.
2) Have YouTube employees look at an account when they get a flagged violation for “mass advertising” or “misleading text”. It is easier to delete/ban an account versus individual videos on an account which has nothing but spam videos.
3) Don’t discourage people from reporting violators (i.e. CAPTCHA phrase requirement after reporting a few violations).

(YouTube Help Articles – Article by Joe Tracy, copyright 2009)
Many people have high speed internet connections that load videos fast. But when you view YouTube videos, YouTube always shows them in a default Standard mode that is far inferior to the high-quality mode. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could change it so that the default was always high-quality mode?
You can. Here’s how.
Step 1: Log into your YouTube account.
Step 2: Once you’re logged in, click your Account link at the top of the page.
Step 3: On the left-hand menu, click Playback Setup.
Step 4: Select “I have a fast connection. Always play higher-quality video when it’s available.
That’s it! Now the default when you view YouTube videos will be to always see them in high quality!
