YouTube Being Inundated with Spam

There has been a mass outbreak of advertising spam videos being uploaded to YouTube with spammers capitalizing on YouTube not allowing people to report usernames for violations. The way the spam works is like this:

1) A video is put together that is simply a slideshow of images.

2) Text is added to the entire video directing the viewer to see the “more info” area for a link to click.

3) The more info area has a link to the site doing the spamming.

4) An automated program is used that slices the video into different lengths so as not to draw the attention of YouTube.

5) The spam program creates numerous accounts and uploads approximately 50 videos to each account. Because the videos have varying lengths, they are not “flagged” in YouTube’s system.

6) Random (and irrelevant) keywords are generated and placed as the title of the video.

YouTube’s problem is that they do not allow users to report username violators to them. The only thing a user can do is “flag” a video. But even then, if a user flags “too many” then YouTube requires the user to start entering a CAPTCHA phrase for each flag, thus discouraging the user from continuing to assist.

Adding to the problem is that when a YouTube employee views a video flagged for “mass advertising” or “misleading text” they only remove that single video. They don’t look at the user account to see that they have dozens of spam videos. If an account is suspended, the violators simply open more accounts.

The spam is clogging the “recent videos” search function of YouTube with mass spam videos and creating tons of irrelevant videos.

We have three recommendations for YouTube to help combat this problem:

1) Allow users to report violating usernames so that a YouTube employee can look at an entire account for mass spamming versus individual videos.

2) Have YouTube employees look at an account when they get a flagged violation for “mass advertising” or “misleading text”. It is easier to delete/ban an account versus individual videos on an account which has nothing but spam videos.

3) Don’t discourage people from reporting violators (i.e. CAPTCHA phrase requirement after reporting a few violations).

Decluttering YouTube Embedded Videos

(YouTube Articles)  Google is known as one of the cleanest sites online, presenting a simple Google homepage that is clutter-free and easy to use. When it comes to Google-owned YouTube, however, it is a completely different story.  For the past year or so Google has been cluttering up embedded YouTube videos, much to the disappointment of people that embed YouTube videos on their Website. The cluttered look makes a clean Website embedding the videos look cluttered. Here are ways YouTube is cluttering the look of embedded videos:

1) In white lettering, they added the title of the video onto the thumbnail of each clip.

2) In white coloring, they added the star ratings of the video onto the thumbnail of each clip.

3) If you use borders, when people press play, the URL of the videos profile page is displayed in the lower part of the frame.

Here is an example of a cluttered video:

You can see the white title and ratings in the video. Yet most people who post embedded videos have already posted the video title and there’s no need to display the rating since you’ve chosen to display the video on your site for a reaon.

Notice that when you press play in the above video, a URL pops up under the video too. These are the type of things we want to get rid of.

Here are steps you can take to declutter your embedded YouTube videos so that they just show the video thumbnail, player, and nothing else, making it easy to add to any site without ruining the site’s look.

Step 1: Find a video you want to embed on YouTube.

Step 2: On the right hand side you’ll see an option to Embed. To the right of the Embed code is a small button that looks like a gear piece. Select it. This will bring up options for your embedded video.

Step 3: Make sure that Show Border and Include Related Videos are unchecked.

Step 4: Grab the embed code and paste it into Notepad, Word, or another document where you can edit it.

When you paste the code into Notepad or Word or another word proccessing program, you’ll notice that there are two URLs listed. In the case of the video in this example, the URL is:

http://www.youtube.com/v/MPPlYtLohY0&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0×234900&color2=0x4e9e00

You’ll find the code listed twice in your embed code. At the end of each URL

Step 5: Simply ad &showinfo=0 to the end of both URLs.

Your URLs will now look like this:

http://www.youtube.com/v/MPPlYtLohY0&hl=en&fs=1&rel=0&color1=0×234900&color2=0x4e9e00&showinfo=0

Step 6: Now copy the entire code and paste it into your Website accordingly.

Now when you view the video it will be clutter free. Here it is:

Notice that the titles are gone, the ratings are gone, and when you get to the end of the video, it asks if you want to replay the video instead of linking to several other videos off site. You’ll also notice that when you press play, a URL no longer pops up under the video.

Congratulations, you’ve decluttered the video and your site will look better as a result.

How to Find Out Why Your Video was Removed from YouTube

(YouTube Article – by Joe Tracy, copyright 2009) It can be frustrating to finish a video you worked hard on only to have it deleted by YouTube after you’ve uploaded it. Whether the video was up for one hour or two years, you may not have a clue as to why the video was removed.

YouTube has strict Guidelines that provide reasons a video may be removed. You may have used copyright music, had too much violence in your movie, or any other number of reasons. If, after reading the guidelines, you still don’t have a clue as to why your video was deleted from YouTube, then here are the steps you can follow to find out why:

Step 1: Go to http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=136154

Step 2: Answer “Yes” to the question, “was your video removed?”

Step 3: Click “I don’t know” to the follow up question.

Step 4: Click “contact us”

Step 5: Fill out the form then click Continue. YouTube will send you a response (this will not be immediate) as to why your video was removed.

If you feel your video was removed unjustly and you wish to appeal then read our article, “How to Appeal Removal of a Video on YouTube“.

How to Appeal Removal of a Video on YouTube

(YouTube Articles – by Joe Tracy, copyright 2009) There are times that a video is removed by the team at YouTube and the video creator feels it was removed unjustly and wants to appeal.  Here are the steps you need to follow in order to appeal the removal of your video from YouTube:

Step 1: Read the YouTube Community Guidelines. This may give you an indication as to why your video was removed from YouTube. The Guidelines, under the section Don’t Cross the Line, are very clear as to what actions will cause a video to be removed. If, after reading the Guidelines, you feel your video was still injustly removed from YouTube, then you can file an appeal.

Step 2: Make sure you are logged into your YouTube account.

Step 3: Go to http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?answer=136154

Step 4: Answer “Yes” to the question.

Step 5: Click “Terms of Use Violation” to the follow up question.

Step 6: Click “contact us”

Step 7: Fill out the form and in the last field, put your appeal.  Remember, if you violated the Community Guidelines in your video then an appeal will not help your case. Only appeal a video you feel was unjustly removed.

Step 8: Click Submit and wait to hear back from YouTube!

Good luck with your appeal. If you are looking to find out why your video was removed from YouTube, then read our article, “How to Find Out Why Your Video was Removed from YouTube“.

YouTube Adding White Titles and Ratings to Videos – How to Remove

(YouTube Articles) In February 2009, YouTube started adding ugly white titles and ratings to embedded videos. They appear in the top left of every video as shown below:

The problem is that YouTube set this as a default, not an option, for embedded videos. Instantly, blogs that heavily publish YouTube videos took on a more crowded and ugly appearance. Luckily, there is a way to get rid of the white titles and ratings on YouTube embedded videos.

When you embed a video, add the following to the end of both URLs in the embed code: &showinfo=0

Adding this tells YouTube to stop showing the white titles and ratings on the embedded video. Here’s how it will look after:
